Martin parr is a british documentary photographer, photojournalist and photo book collector.
Today i will be analysing one of martins photographs.
Image analysis
The image above shows the classic depiction of a british seaside. In this photograph we can see that Martin has made use of one of the photographic elements, the rule of thirds. I believe that Martin has chosen to utilise this certain technique as it gives the image its own distinct areas within in it, the main areas that draw the viewers attention is the litter, the woman pointing and the old couple on the bench i believe this gives the photo more depth and empathy.
Genre
The genre of this image is social reportage, this is Martins forte as if you look at Martins previous works we see that this genre is his main focus. I believe that he chooses to follow in this genre as unlike photo journalism this photographs ordinary people going about there daily business so it can produce some very unique imagery within his photographs and they may not even have a given story but may just be something unique happening in someones daily routine.
Meaning
In my opinion i believe the meaning behind this image could perhaps be difference in generations as the elderly couple are just enjoying themselves while the family on the left look very distraught and disconnected as the child in the pram would appear to be unattended. I believe another aspect that is good about Martins work is how he makes the viewer focus on these unique characters within his photographs to coincide with the idea of identity.
Purpose
I believe the purpose of this image is to show a classic yet modern depiction of the British seaside linking into the genre of social reportage.
